The VUTC One-Act Play Festival is looking for directors to direct shows chosen for the Festival. The vision of the Festival is to support the development of original plays which represent the unique voices and perspectives of playwrights with connection to York Region. To that end, The Festival celebrates diversity of all kinds whether in its casting choices or selection of plays for the festival program. Directors will have an opportunity to read the selected scripts and request to direct that which they are most passionate about. They will work with the playwrights to develop the show and determine the casting of the plays they direct.
Playwrights are encourage to Direct their own plays, in 2017 Maissa Bessada, Co-Directed her own original script, Ace Galaksi-Space Dick at Large; The Race to Save Destiny.
"I've finally had a taste of doing Sci-fi, and now I want more!👽
All of the speeches made prior to the performances kept downplaying the actual work this group put into it, and how amazing of a show we pulled off ... It was SUCH a joy and and honour to work with you all, I was blow away and humbled by your talent, dedication and professionalism throughout this whole crazy journey, and I hope we get to work together again soon"
Maissa Bessada, Playwright and Co-Director
Ace Galaksi- Space Dick at Large; The Race to Save Destiny
"Thanks a lot for you and everyone preformed and participated in the amazing play Ace Galaksi.
Reminds me of Hitchhiker guide to the galaxy.

In 2017 we also had two shows with Actor-Directors; Kay Valentine both acted and directed the production of A Little Something for the Ducks, and John Dowson, acted and directed in A Death of Me by Norman Foster.
Those who wish to direct in this festival must be available to rehearse in Newmarket, Ontario. Rehearsal schedule is yet to be set, but some weekend rehearsals may be scheduled. Total play rehearsal time commitment is approximately 30 hours per play, with each play rehearsal running about three hours.
Successful candidates will have a passion for live theatre and a strong belief in the importance of the rehearsal process. Candidates should be good communicators who have previous experience working on a theatrical production team, and have excellent organizational skills. As these are short plays with little or no set, the director needs to have an active imagination and an aptitude for working in an open space. This is a festival of plays, so our directors are expected to work in a collaborative environment with the Artistic Director and respective acting companies. And of course, previous stage directing experience wouldn’t hurt either!
This is the second year of the One-Act Festival, and we are looking to build upon the runaway success of last year's festival. If you are an individual that gets excited by the opportunity to create in a supportive and cooperative environment, we encourage you to join us for an unforgettable experience in the beautiful Town of Newmarket. Those candidates under consideration will be contacted by email where a live interview will be arranged. Successful candidates will be notified as soon as the interview process is completed.
